Salzburg, Funicular, Fortress, and lunch with a view.

 We were very leisurely this morning.  We planned to leave the hotel around 9 am, which was pretty close to what we did.  We bought a Salzburg Pass at the front desk.

Beyond Recall by Brigitte Kowanz

There are 4 of these big cubes at each corner of the bridge.  The words "Beyond" and "Recall" are lit so they are visible at night. The bridge was built during the war but it is a memorial to the people who died while being forced by the Nazis to build the bridge.

We headed out for breakfast at Tomaselli Cafe.  We had noticed that they had had a breakfast menu when we were there yesterday.  We found a table right away. 

I ordered the ham and cheese omelet.  You had to order the jam separately.

No one was playing chess on the chess board as we walked by.

We were looking for the entry to the funicular to go up to the fortress.  We could use our Salzburg pass to go up.  

It took about a minute to go up.  

Once at the top we had great views of Salzburg.

Entry to the fortress.  We did not really want to walk through the fortress.  That was probably a mistake because we had a very difficult time finding the way back down.  

Down to the Ground by Paul Wallach

This is a temporary art piece 2013-2024.  Represents a star falling to the ground.

We wanted to go to the Museum of Modern Art which was not all the way down.  We kept asking people. "Go down and then turn left"  But where was the correct way down? We gradually got to the correct place to turn left, under the funicular.  Whew.

After we went under the funicular the route was well marked.  It was a very pretty one mile walk with a certain amount of ups and downs. We were not in any hurry.

I forgot to take a picture of what it looked like outside.  Inside it was a round room with a hole in the top.  The best viewing time is dawn or dusk.

No title on this piece, but the kids liked it.

The Museum of Modern Art.  We made it.  

That was where we were. 

First thing was to go to the cafe for a little sit-down.

Then we used our Salzburg pass to get into the Art Museum.  We started on the 3rd floor and worked our way down.  There was a lot of interactive art.  

Watched a movie of this being built in fast motion. 

Listened to some music here.

These looked like prayer flags.  They had thoughts or words on them.

It looked like a row of Lipizzaner horses.

By then it was 2 pm and time for lunch.  We walked a little way down the hill to the Stadtalm Restaurant

I don't think that you can recognize the fortress reflection in the wine. Oh well.

The restaurant was also a hotel.  It sure had quite the view.

I had the pork Cordon Bleu 

All the cheesy stuff leaking out.

Jeanne and Sharon had the Wiener Schnitzel and Kris had the roasted pork with dumplings and cabbage.  They totally forgot to bring her the cabbage.  She was full by the time it came.

We had to walk back to the Museum of Modern Art to get the elevator which would take us down to Old Town.

We used our Salzburg pass for that as well.

The Mirabella garden was close to our hotel, so we decided to go through on our way.  This is the part we did not see on our Sound of Music tour.  But it is what we had seen from the fortress.

We got home about 4:30 pm.

Nap time.  Jeanne especially needed a nap because she is leaving the hotel at 3 am to get to the airport.  She arranged a taxi pick-up.  

About 8 pm we decided that we were still pretty full from lunch so we thought that we would find a place where we could get a glass of wine and a nosh.  

We went through the Mirabella Gardens.  It was supposed to be lit up at night.  Well, the fountain was lit up.

We ended out at the Sacher Cafe.

This was not what I considered a light nosh.  I took half of the sandwich to the hotel for my breakfast.  It was called butter toast.

Jeanne had an apple strudel and said that it was very good. What a nice end to a great day.  We had perfect weather.
