Vienna to Salzburg

 We had a little more relaxed morning, though Jeanne and I still had our 7 am breakfast.  We joined Kris and Sharon when they went down at 8 am.  We headed back to the rooms to get organized and packed up.  We didn't need to leave the hotel until 11 am to go to the train station.  Sharon, Jeanne, and I wandered around a bit and checked out our neighborhood.

Friday was farmer's market day.  So stalls were being set up.  

We got back to the hotel.  Everyone was ready to go so we went and checked out.  I called an Uber.  We got to the train station at 11 am.  Some of the roads had been closed because of a marathon.  We had plenty of time.

The Westbahnhof (train station) is like a huge mall with restaurants and stores galore.  We found a table to sit at but since we could only sit there if we had food, Jeanne went and bought some chips.  

Around noon we were ready to have lunch.  Too many choices. We went with Trzesniewski, gourmet finger sandwiches.  We could have done McDonalds or Subway!

I chose egg with pickle, egg with bacon, tomato, and celery & beet.  They were interesting.  I don't think that I would go out of my way to get them again.

We arrived in Salzburg on time at 4:38 pm,  We found a taxi stand but there were no taxis, so I arranged for an Uber.  The ETA kept on changing from the one who was coming, 1 min. then 3 min., then 9 min., 3 min.!! By then a taxi had arrived so we canceled the Uber and took the taxi  to the Hotel am Mirrabelleplatz.

We got settled in, but we did not have much time to relax.  We headed off to find the St Peter's church where we were going to a Mozart dinner concert. Naturally, it was raining by this time.  We could borrow umbrellas from the hotel.  We left at 6:30 pm for what was supposed to be a 15 min walk (google said). We got there at 7:20 pm.  Not so much due to the distance but because we were wandering through Old Town and it was not clear where we should go.  I kept asking for directions.  Even once we got to the right building, we had to ask for directions because the front door was well hidden. 

The wine glasses were all tipped sideways when we came in, maybe for decorative purposes.  They took the away when we ordered wine and brought our wine in different glasses.

Amazing room and it was packed.

We would be having 3 courses (all foods that Mozart would have eaten) and listened to 3 selections of Mozart operas.  The started with selections from Don Giovanni. The 2 singers were accompanied by a stringed quintet.  They were amazing.

They sang some duets and some solos with a lot of acting and moving around the room.  Luckily, they had an English synopsis with each section so we sort of knew what was going on.

They turned the lights back on for our first course.

The second set was from Le Nozze Di Figaro

The lighting was difficult with candles and the lights turned low.

Main course was "supreme of roasted capon on glaze of red wine and herbs with creamy white polenta and vegetables from "Padre Prior's garden."

 The quintet played Serenade "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik"  

Then they had selections from "Die Zauberflote" (The magic flute). It was a fun piece.

Much to her chagrin, Sharon got serenaded a little.

For an encore they sang happy birthday to someone in the audience.

Then we had the dessert course.

Original "Salzburger Nockerl" "Sweet like Love and light like Snow"  It was a meringue on top of berries of some type.  It was like eating air.  I would have liked more berries. 

When it was over they came around with the bill.  The meal was included with the performance but drinks were extra.  They were also expensive. 

It only took us 20 minutes to walk home. It was only lightly sprinkling.  

It was a fun evening.
